Start with the roof and the gutters

Most storm water enters through a compromised envelope. A pre-season roof inspection and clear gutters and valleys prevent more interior damage than any sandbag ever will.

Drainage around the structure

Water needs somewhere to go that is not your slab:

  • Grade soil to fall away from the foundation
  • Extend downspouts at least six feet from the house
  • Clear yard drains and area inlets of debris
  • Trim limbs that overhang the roof

Prepare the paperwork too

Photograph every room and store the images in the cloud. Confirm your flood policy is active — there is a 30-day waiting period, so buying it when a storm enters the Gulf is too late. Keep your policy numbers and a restoration contact accessible offline.
