The soil does the damage
Expansive clay swells when wet and shrinks in drought. That constant movement puts shear stress on the water lines cast into or running beneath the slab, and copper abrading against concrete eventually develops pinholes.
How leaks are located
Acoustic listening equipment, line pressure isolation and thermal imaging narrow the leak to a few square feet before any concrete is touched. Guessing and jackhammering is how homeowners end up with three holes and one repair.
Repair or reroute
For a single failure, a spot repair through the slab may be cheapest. For aging copper with multiple leaks, rerouting the line overhead through the attic is usually less expensive over the life of the home and avoids future slab work.
