Trust your nose first
A musty smell that keeps coming back after cleaning is microbial growth on a damp material you cannot see. In Conroe homes that smell usually traces back to a wall cavity, a cabinet base or a crawl space.
Watch the water bill
A jump of even fifteen to twenty percent with no change in household usage is a strong slab leak indicator. Shut every fixture off and watch the meter's low-flow dial; movement means water is escaping somewhere.
Physical clues in the structure
Hidden losses eventually show up in the building materials:
- Warm spots on a slab floor
- Nail pops and hairline cracks in drywall
- Doors that suddenly stick in their frames
- Cupped or crowned hardwood boards
- Peeling paint or bubbling wallpaper
